RESIDENTIAL ADMISSION PROCESS​

1. Call for a brief, screening interview: Men & Women: 609-345-2020 Ext.6100 Fax # 609-345-0952. Whenever it is possible the person seeking treatment should be available to participate in the phone call. At that time you will be informed regarding bed space and initial eligibility.

2. Applicants on Methadone or Suboxone must be referred by their MAT treatment program.

3. Prior to setting an admission date we will need the following information (fax):

   1. Medical Status- If available documented TB test results (within 6 mos.), a list of presently prescribed medications, most recent physical exam results, information regarding any medical condition that can interfere with an ability to fully participate in treatment, seizure history, information regarding chronic illness that require attention or other physical problem that requires ongoing care.

   2. Psychiatric Status- If applicable, results of recent evaluation to include a history of any psychiatric hospitalizations and a list of prescribed medications.

   3. Legal Status- Information regarding pending charges and ongoing cases either criminal or civil that require court appearances during the course of treatment.

4. The admission information will be reviewed within five working days and you will receive a call to schedule an admission date or to discuss our concerns regarding eligibility.

5. Whenever possible the date will be within a week of approval.

6. The client will need to arrange their transportation to JBRC. With prior notice we can arrange for pick up at the Atlantic City bus or train terminals. Admission appointments will be between 9 AM and 2:30 PM. Individuals on methadone will be scheduled before 12 PM. If you are on Methadone or Suboxone we strongly suggest that you receive your medication before you arrive for your admission. If an individual is unable to arrive during this time frame different arrangements can be made on a case-by-case basis.

7. Clients entering residential treatment must discontinue unemployment or welfare benefits. Clients will be required to apply for local welfare which entitles them to Medicaid, Food stamps and a monthly stipend. These benefits are used to offset the cost of treatment and medical expenses. The client will be able to retain $25 a month in their account for incidental expenditures. Clients who have Medicaid upon admission are not required to discontinue Medicaid benefits. Any clients receiving (SSI) Social Security Insurance or (SSD) Social Security Disability will be required to pay cost sharing of $185.00 per month which will be due the 10th of each month.

Individuals are considered ineligible for any of the following reasons

• The client is a sexual offender (Megan’s Law registration required) Tier 3 and 4.

• The client has been classified as an arsonist and/or history of arson within the past ten years. This does not include before the age of 16.

• The client has committed an act of unprovoked physical assault within the past 18 months.

• The client has multiple scheduled court appearances that cannot be postponed until treatment is completed. This does not include drug court.

• The client has medical or dental conditions beyond the scope of our medical staff that requires ongoing outside medical care. This does not include HIV related care.

• Clients is unable able to walk up and down two flights of stairs without assistance and do basic household chores.

• Client needs a controlled substance for pain management.

• Client needs medication to be able to sleep.

• Is a safety risk to themselves or others; excessive impulsivity coupled with anger, aggressive behavior and/or acute depression.

• Based on client’s psychiatric history or a professional assessment, it is unlikely that the individual would be employable despite psychiatric medication and addiction treatment.

• Active psychosis, delusional thinking or significant disruptive behaviors.

• The client has attempted or threatened suicide within the past year. This will be reviewed by our medical staff.

If any of the above mentioned circumstances have been or expect to be resolved in the immediate future we are open to a closer review of the application. Please explain these circumstances in a cover letter.

Client Must Bring with them on day of Admission:

• Prescription Medication (7 day supply in original container)

• One of the following; birth certificate, driver’s license, passport, county I.D. ,SS card or number, jail/prison ID

• Insurance/Medicaid Card if applicable

• Emergency Contact Info/ name, phone # for others who need to know about client’s treatment.

 

Clients admitted to JBRC shall be required to adhere to the personal belongings policy set forth.  All items deemed inappropriate or unnecessary will be returned to the client's home at the client's expense.  All items left for a period of 72 hours will be discarded or become the property of the John Brooks Recovery Center.

The following items are strongly suggested and the maximum amount is indicated:

• 10 days of clothing

• 15 pair of underwear

• 3 pair footwear

• 3 pair pajamas

• 1 bathrobe

• 1 pair slippers &shower shoes

• 1 rain jacket and hat

• 1 coat/jacket seasonally appropriate

• 3 bath towels and wash cloths

​

1 of each of the following hygiene products are allowed (all items must not contain alcohol):

• Deodorant

• Shampoo

• Conditioner

• Lotion

• Shave gel or foam

• Soap-1 pack

• Body wash

• Hairspray or mousse –females only (must be pump, non aerosol)

• Hair gel or grease

• Chap Stick

• Q-tips

• Comb

• Brush

• Shower cap

• Toothpaste

• 1 perm - females only

• 1 hair dye –females only

• Feminine hygiene products – tampons, sanitary napkins

• Hair Dryer, curling iron- females only

• Make-up - 1 each eyeliner, lip gloss, foundation, mascara, blush – females only

• Head scarf – for sleeping and/or religious purpose

• Kufi- allowed for religious purpose

• Yamika- allowed for religious purpose

 

Other Allowed Items:

• Eyeglasses, contacts

• Minimal jewelry

• Small clock radio

• Writing paper, envelopes, stamps

• Religious headwear

• Money (check or money order) will be deposited in the clients account. NO CASH

 

Not allowed Items:

• Cell Phones

• Food, candy, supplements, protein shakes

• Perfume/body spray

• Skirts or dresses, shorts must be knee length

• Pillows/Stuffed animals

• Lighters

• Clothing that features alcohol, drugs, guns 

• Bank cards, credit cards

• Magazines or books of a sexual nature, do not have magazine subscriptions forwarded 

 

All clothing items must be brought in large plastic bags and not suitcases or back packs. JBRC lacks appropriate storage space, and cannot store luggage or personal items.

New residents are also allowed to bring up to 10 unopened packs of cigarettes (sealed carton) with them at the time of admission.

 

How to Bring Additional Items

The resident will be allowed one property drop off at or immediately after admission and once a month thereafter. In the event that a drop off is not feasible, packages can be mailed with special arrangements. Drop offs can be brought to the Main entrance (S. Carolina Ave. side of the building) located at 1315 Pacific Avenue, Atlantic City, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 AM and 4PM or at other times with prior arrangements.
